Locked high school tracks in Leon County have sparked a broader debate about what taxpayers are getting for millions of dollars spent on athletic facilities — including whether the district’s investment in artificial turf has delivered the savings school officials once promoted.
Bobby Nahoom, a resident who has been pushing to reopen the tracks to the public, said the turf issue surfaced during those discussions.
“This was part our effort to try to get the tracks reopened to the public,” Nahoom said. “One of the things that the school board mentioned, and representatives of the school district mentioned, was that one of the reasons they installed the turf fields was there was going to be cost savings to the school district and taxpayers.”…
