An “Iconic” Department Store Chain Is Laying Off Thousands and Shutting Down A Florida Store

If you are a Floridian who used to go and hang out at malls during your childhood, you might remember your parents taking you to Sears, JC Penney, Dillard’s, or Macy’s to buy your clothing. If you were lucky, you might have gotten a few bucks to go to Orange Julius.

Unfortunately, one of these department stores is laying off employees and will be closing a Florida store.

About Macy’s And What Went Wrong: Macy’s was founded in 1858 and as of 2015 it was the largest department store company by retail sales in the United States. Fast Company calls Macy’s “iconic.”

Although there are around 500 stores throughout the nation, Macy’s began closing stores in 2015. In 2020, it announced that it was closing a fifth of its locations – or 125 stores.

Macy’s has told Axios that the closures are meant to “meet the needs of an ever-changing consumer and marketplace.”

The 2024 Layoffs And The Closure Of A Florida Store: According to The Wall Street Journal reporting in January of 2024, Macy’s plans to lay off 2,350 jobs (as it prepares to move some jobs “offshore”) and close five stores.
