A GROUP of residents have been left devastated by their city’s actions and lack of care for the community after it tore down trees.
City leaders ordered the removal of 20 live oak trees to make space for a new development despite the backlash from the local community.
Residents from the Park Terrace Neighborhood had successfully prevented the removal of the trees for several months until crosses were painted on some tree trunks condemning them to removal.
This was what first alerted residents to the latest plans just days before the scheduled felling.
The removal at the old Northwood Mall was deemed necessary by leaders as part of a project to build a new headquarters for the Tallahassee Police Department and a potential residential development.
Despite telling residents on Monday that the city would review its plans to remove the trees following their outcry, the sounds of chopping woke up residents on Thursday morning.
