TPD: Fatal shooting off Park Ave. tied to police chase, crash in Midtown’s Lafayette Park

The fatal shooting of a man outside a residence off East Park Avenue is connected to a police pursuit through a Midtown neighborhood that ended with a car crash at the edge of Lafayette Park.

The Tallahassee Police Department responded to a shooting just after 11 p.m. Saturday in the 2200 block of Parkbrook Court, where they found a man dead outside a residence. TPD identified the victim on Monday as Michael Long, 32.

Minutes after the shooting, residents in Midtown reported that police chased a car as it sped down McDaniel Street, hitting a moving vehicle in the process, before losing control on Williams Street and crashing into trees at Lafayette Park near the tennis courts and a Boy Scouts building.

The driver of the car, who police believe was armed with a gun, fled the scene and managed to elude capture. Alicia Hill, TPD spokeswoman, couldn’t say whether there were other occupants in the vehicle. No arrests have been made, she said.

“I can confirm that we do have reason to believe that the vehicle that was involved in that crash is connected to the shooting,” Hill said. “However, we are still investigating what that connection is.”
