Tallahassee woman faces charges for housing more than 60 dogs in ‘inhumane conditions’

A woman faces criminal charges after 66 dogs were confiscated from her self-operated pet rescue in Leon County.

Judy Dubois, 57, was arrested Thursday on multiple misdemeanor charges of animal cruelty and confining animals without sufficient food or water. She’s being held in the Leon County Detention Facility, records show.

The arrest comes two weeks after Dubois was slapped with 60 citations for “inhumane conditions,” among other things, when animal control and the Leon County Sheriff’s Office were sent to do a welfare check on three dogs belonging to Dubois, who owns and runs an animal shelter named Dubois Rescue.

As previously reported, when LCSO deputies and animal control officers arrived at the home on Sparrow Road, they were met with “a strong odor of feces,” according to the citations.

They found “upwards of 57 additional dogs” in the yard contained in wire cages that weren’t properly enclosed with walls or a roof to protect them from the weather.

A total of 66 dogs — many of which had matted fur, no clean or accessible food or water and were standing in a large amount of their own waste — were seized from the property and taken to the Tallahassee-Leon County Animal Service Center.
