Sure, it’s a familiar story: Longtime mom-and-pop shop closes in the face of competition from big corporate chains and the ever-increasing slate of government regulations.

But fishermen will tell you, “This time, it’s serious.” Rivers Bait & Tackle is closing after 60 years in Tallahassee.

Maybe fishermen can buy crickets, worms and minnows for bait somewhere else. But who are they going to get to fix their classic Ambassadeur reel or put new guides on their saltwater rod? Who’s going to make them a new cast net and give them tips on casting for mullet? Who’s going to suggest a new place to dip a cane pole or sell them the best lure to catch a bass in Lake Jackson?

Nobody, that’s who.

“This is a bummer,” said Larry Abele, the retired Florida State University provost. “There’s nobody else like (Rivers Bait & Tackle).”

Be that as it may, Johnny Rivers has had enough. He’s had enough of fighting “four super Walmarts, 12 Ace Hardwares, Academy Sports, Sports Authority and soon a Bass Pro Shop.” He’s tired of “every time I turn around the government has its hand in my pocket” for licenses, fees and taxes.
