What does it mean to foster a dog?

I adopted my two dogs Ruby and Jax from the Tallahassee-Leon Animal Services Shelter, have been fostering since 2017, and was dismayed to hear the animals living there now are in danger due to upcoming renovations. You can save those animals by fostering, and I hope you will.

When you foster an animal, you take it into your home and care for it like your own. As a foster parent, you get to pick the dog (or other animal, but I only know dogs), based on size and temperament. There are lots of sizes and breed mixes to choose from. All the costs for caring for your foster – crates, dog bowls, blankets, toys, food, vet care, meds, etc. – are covered by the shelter. They also handle screening and approving potential adopters.

Here are some reasons you might be a perfect foster:

  • You recently adopted a young dog. A dog friendly foster could help you socialize your puppy.  It’s cheaper than Doggie DayCare and much safer than dog parks.
  • You’re retired, or work from home and don’t want a full-time dog. If you travel for work or pleasure, we can help you find a temporary home for your foster while you’re gone.
  • You are getting started in your career, or still in school, and can’t afford to own a dog. You get all the joy of dog ownership with none of the costs.
  • You have a heart for animals and are willing to be a little inconvenienced for a few months, while shelter renovations proceed.
