The Godby High School Cougars won twice Thursday night: On the gridiron against Baker County High School for its homecoming game, and against all odds for its marching band.

The Iconic Blue Flame Marching Band of Godby High was given a $140,000 check during halftime by Superintendent Rocky Hanna to purchase new band uniforms and instruments.

“I was overcome and overwhelmed with emotion,” said marching band director Timotheus Harper. “We don’t have all the money in the world to outfit and equip these kids. It’s not just about the equipment and uniforms though, it just means a lot to see that they truly care about the kids.”

Hanna said the check brought Harper to tears, and that he had been asking for help with the task of refreshing the band’s equipment for a little over a year.

“Godby being a Title I school means they don’t always have the means to fundraise large amounts of money, so I got everyone on board, and we just made it happen to show our support,” Hanna said. “They really needed this.”
