A guide to the Veterans Day parade and events in Tallahassee for 2024

Flags will be waving Monday as Tallahassee honors veterans.

Veterans Day began as Armistice Day, first celebrated in November 1919 to honor those who died in World War I. Now it honors veterans of all wars.

The war-ending armistice between the Allies and Germany happened at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918, (thus 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month).

The ceremony for Tallahassee’s parade, organized by Vet Events Tally, begins the day before at 11 a.m. Sunday with the start of the 24-Hour Watch at the Vietnam Memorial by Florida State University ROTC.

In conjunction with the FSU Army ROTC, the Veterans Day Parade pauses at 11 a.m. to honor the closing of the 24-Hour Watch at the Vietnam Memorial. Respectful silence is appreciated until the playing of Taps concludes.

A 21-gun salute will mark the end of the ceremony.

There’s a Memorial to Memorial Veterans Day 5K run at 8 a.m. Monday and a downtown gathering after the parade.
