Opinion: Tallahassee must take pedestrian and cyclist roadway deaths more seriously

The death of bike commuter Jan-Felix Mueller in October was a tragic reminder of a far bigger problem in Tallahassee: pervasive reckless driving.

Mueller was killed while doing everything right: legally crossing the street at a pedestrian crossing while riding on the sidewalk in downtown. The driver purportedly ran a red light.

Unfortunately, this incident is not unique or even rare. We see, daily, examples of poor judgment and driving. We have seen drivers on two- and three-lane one-way streets stop traffic in the left lane to make a presumably missed right turn. We have witnessed injury-causing accidents when drivers fail to yield at stop signs or were driving so fast they could not slowdown in time to avoid other vehicles.

On and near the Florida State University campus, drivers routinely run stop signs even when pedestrians are traversing well-identified crosswalks. We have quite literally been within inches of being seriously injured by drivers (and cyclists and scooter riders).
