Chabad of Tallahassee celebrates Shavuot with Torah reading, ice cream

At a unique crossroads between religion and cuisine, the holiday of Shavuot, which begins this year at sunset on Sunday, June 1, and concludes at nightfall on Tuesday, June 3, celebrates the Giving of the Torah and Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai 3,337 years ago.

A central aspect of the holiday observance is men, women, and children hearing the Ten Commandments read at synagogue from a Torah scroll, as well as joining family and friends for festive meals. Chabad of Tallahassee and FSU is holding a family-friendly reading at 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 1, at 224 Chapel Drive, followed by an ice cream party and dairy buffet.

“Shavuot is the time when the Jewish People received the Torah together at Mt. Sinai as ‘one person with one heart,’ so it’s important that Tallahassee’s Jewish community will gather as well, to commemorate this day in the same spirit,” said Rabbi Schneur Oirechman, who directs Chabad of Tallahassee and FSU. “During this trying time, joining together in unity as we hear the Ten Commandments read from the Torah is more meaningful than ever.”…
