The year was 1919. World War I, the war to end all wars was over, and the troops were coming home to rebuild their lives, to get back to work, and recover. The realization to help these veterans was recognized and from that need a new organization was created by an act of Congress named the American Legion.
At the same time, the Department of Florida American Legion was created and the various Posts throughout the cities of Florida were chartered, and as legend has it, after missing the chance to grab Post No. 12, the Florida Secretary of State, R.A. Gray himself, the 1st Commander of the Tallahassee Post, picked No. 13. “Hell! Hardly anything ever goes right in Tallahassee. We’ll take ‘13′!”
The next item of business was to name Post 13 in honor of Tallahassee’s first soldier killed in World War I, Post 13 became “The Claude L. Sauls American Legion Post 13.”…
