At the beginning of the fall semester, Florida State University reinstated its “Heads Up” pedestrian safety initiative amid growing concerns about traffic hazards affecting students both on and off campus. In partnership with Student Affairs and the Student Government Association, the campaign’s revival is marketed as a renewed push for accountability and transparency to help make the campus and surrounding community safer for all.
The initiative, originally launched in 2017, was reinstated in August by the FSU Police Department to promote awareness and responsible behavior among drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. According to FSU, the campaign encourages everyone “to pay attention when they’re walking and driving on campus.”
The campaign’s return coincides with a series of increasing pedestrian incidents in Leon County. Tallahassee is one of the top 10 cities in the state for traffic crashes resulting in serious or fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists.
