Before dawn, hunger drives hundreds to Second Harvest food distribution as aid runs dry

A grandmother and three of her grandchildren slept in her vehicle to ensure they would have food in the morning.

They arrived to the Sears parking lot at the Governors Square Mall in Tallahassee at 9:45 p.m. on October 31. The Second Harvest of the Big Bend food drive wasn’t set to begin until 7 a.m. the next morning.

“She wanted to make sure she got in line,” said James McGowan, Second Harvest Chief Development Officer. “She didn’t know if she would have enough food to make it through the weekend.”…
