The idea of creating a special tax district for Tallahassee’s nonprofit hospital has become the latest stumbling block on the already bumpy journey to creating an academic medical center, but all the involved parties agree that the proposal is dead on arrival.
In a rare joint statement issued by Florida State University and Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, the two entities said they wanted to be clear that they didn’t support creating “a special hospital taxing district in Leon County or anywhere else.”
“At no time has either institution ever proposed a special taxing district, nor has anyone ever asked us to endorse one,” the hospital and university said. “We would oppose a special hospital taxing district if they did.”…
