Headed back to the state championships for the 11th straight year is the Marathon High’s boys cross-country team and they’ll be joined in Tallahassee by one of Monroe County’s breakout talents — Coral Shores sophomore Ali Wheatley, who delivered the race she had been chasing all fall, to qualifying for the FHSAA State Championships on Saturday, Nov. 22, at Tallahassee’s Apalachee Regional Park.
Wheatley smashed the 20-minute barrier at the Region 4-2A meet, clocking 19:33 for seventh place and becoming Coral Shores’ first female state qualifier in 14 years. The 36-second personal best also makes her the third-fastest Monroe County high school girl ever. She’ll run as the county’s solo Class 2A representative at 7:20 a.m.
“I’m super excited to represent my school on the state level,” said Wheatley. “It’s going to be a great experience to get to run in the Northern part of the state on one of the best courses we have.”…
