Man sentenced on fraud, identity theft charges following ATM skimming scheme

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A man was sentenced to over three years in prison after pleading guilty to fraud charges as part of an ATM skimming scheme, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Daniel Balan, 47, pleaded guilty in September to five counts of bank fraud, five counts of aggravated identity theft, one count of possessing 15 or more access devices and making a false statement to a federal agency in connection with an ATM skimming scheme.

Court documents show that Balan placed skimming devices and cameras on several ATMs in the Tallahassee area. The devices were used to steal customer account information.

Records show he then used the information to steal over $56,000. When he was arrested, law enforcement found 28 gift cards that had been encoded with stolen account information in Balan’s pocket…
