As drought conditions continue, Gadsden County leader encouraging cattle producers to apply for assistance

GADSDEN COUNTY, Fla. (WCTV) – Most of the Big Bend and South Georgia have received a good amount of rain over the last week, but much of North Florida and South Georgia is still listed as severe to extreme on the recent drought monitor.

One local leader in Gadsden County is alerting cattle ranchers that if they suffered grazing losses during the dry season, they may be eligible for compensation through the Livestock Forage Disaster Program.

Doug Croley serves as a county committee member for the USDA Farm Service Agency. He said this has been such a tough few months for growers and ranchers, and shared insight on where to find help.

“They’ve had to start feeding hay earlier, as well as molasses and other protein supplements for the cattle herds. That’s increased the cost, an outreach effort to let people know what’s going on and remind these cattle producers, ‘Hey, you need to call in, see what’s available to help you out with these feeding costs,’” he said…
