Decatur County residents observed Hosea Williams Day on Tuesday with a wreath-laying ceremony in Attapulgus that honored the late civil rights leader.
About 20 people sang songs from the Civil Rights Movement — “Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me ‘Round” and “We Shall Overcome” — as they walked arm-in-arm from Attapulgus City Hall to a historical marker at Griffin and Main streets.
It was the sixth observance of Hosea Williams Day, according to organizer Rahn D. Fudge of the Phoenix Affaire Group. The ceremony remembers Williams, who was born in Attapulgus in 1926. Williams earned a Purple Heart during World War II.
