Havana’s abandoned elementary school draws $580K in fines as penalties keep rising

HAVANA, Fla. — The long-vacant former Havana Elementary School sits along a main road into town, and some residents say it has become an eyesore they do not want visitors to see.

“Nothing is really being done. It’s an out of town person that owns this building and I think it was owned by a few people then they had a falling out and it’s kind of just been left to fall apart. There’s not one intact window in there. There’s not one piece of copper in there,” Town of Havana Councilman Matthew Wesolowski said.

A longtime resident said he has heard different ideas over the years about what the site might become but has seen very little activity there.
