Shutdown strains unpaid TSA officers at Tallahassee airport as financial worries grow

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Even without a paycheck, Transportation Security Administration officers are still showing up at the Tallahassee airport to keep travelers moving through security lines as the federal government shutdown continues.

“It makes me angry that we’re in this position again because congress cannot agree with one another,” said Chris Finlay, president of AFGE Local 556, a labor union for TSA representing airports in north and central Florida.

TSA officers are considered essential workers, meaning they are required to report to work unless they have an approved reason, such as a doctor’s note. But as the shutdown drags on, Finlay said many officers are facing a growing reality: They may not be able to afford to keep coming in…
