Leon County Sheriff debuts social media videos to teach safety, crime prevention

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Leon County deputies are turning to social media in an effort to teach children about crime awareness and prevention, launching a new series of YouTube videos aimed at connecting students with law enforcement.

The Leon County Sheriff’s Office is working with the Leon County School District on the initiative, called the “Safety Star” series. The sheriff’s office kicked off the program today at Sabal Palm Elementary School, where students were among the first to see the videos designed to engage and teach.

The series begins with an animated sheriff character. Sheriff Walt McNeal said the approach is meant to help children see deputies as approachable. “And in doing that we are sending a message to the kids that one, we are talking about we are your friends and we can assist you and we are somebody that you should be friendly with,” McNeal said…
