Major food delivery brings 35,000 pounds to Big Bend as summer hunger rises

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A major food delivery is arriving in the Big Bend at a time when local leaders say the need is especially high, with summer hunger setting in as children lose access to daily school meals.

More than 35,000 pounds of shelf-stable food is being delivered to Second Harvest of the Big Bend — enough to feed more than 1,400 people in a week. Second Harvest says 1 in 6 people in the Big Bend and 1 in 4 children are food insecure.

The delivery is part of a nationwide effort from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, a campaign to send 250 truckloads of food to 250 food banks across all 50 states as part of the America250 celebration…
