HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A petition calling on Hillsborough County Public Schools to reconsider parts of its updated student dress code is gaining support as parents continue to debate the changes ahead of the new school year.
The petition focuses primarily on the district’s new rule requiring leggings and spandex to be covered by clothing extending at least to mid-thigh. The organizer argues the policy disproportionately affects female students and is asking the district to revisit the rule while seeking more input from parents, students and educators before it takes effect.

The updated dress code also includes more specific restrictions on pajamas worn as outer clothing, minimum hemlines for shorts, skirts and dresses, and certain head and face coverings, while allowing religious and some medical exceptions.
