What is an Eco-Counter? Tampa unveils new tool to promote healthy lifestyle

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Tampa has unveiled a new “Eco-Counter,” a digital display unit that counts passing pedestrians and bicyclists and displays daily and annual totals to inspire residents to live a healthier lifestyle.

The Eco-Counter, currently on the corner of North Boulevard and West Cass Street, helps monitor usage patterns and trends in the area along the Green Spine, the city announced.

The counter is intended to motivate residents to swap out their cars for a bike to add to the data.

The city said there are more than 130 miles of bike facilities available, with more coming thanks to projects like the upcoming West Riverwalk and Green Spine extensions, noting the city’s M.O.V.E.S. Plan prioritizes safe transportation options that deliver “a healthier, safer, and more connected city.”

Tampa said similar Eco-Counter devices are in major cities across the U.S. and 55 countries across the globe. The data can be found online at eco-display-map.eco-counter.com/ .
