Baker Mayfield On Fast Start With Bucs: ‘Not About Stats!’

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield is playing perhaps some of the best football of his career over the last 12 months and has developed into a touchdown machine.

After leading the franchise to a division title and playoff win in a season where he threw 28 touchdowns, Baker has picked up where he left off in 2023 and has thrown five touchdowns in two games en route to the Buccaneers beginning the season 2-0.

In what is an eye-popping stat, since the start of last season, Mayfield is third in the NFL for touchdown passes (33), behind only Jordan Love (34) and Dak Prescott (38).

But for Baker, the individual stats mean nothing; it’s about doing his best to help the team win.

“For me, this is what I wanted,” Mayfield said of his start to life as a Buccaneer . “The group, taking a chance to come here, understanding the pieces that I had and the potential that this group could have. So, for me, there were a lot of low moments last year. It could have even been better, but it’s never about the individual stats anyway. It’s just trying to find ways to win, but it’s been awesome so far.”
