The storm made landfall as a Category 4 storm Sept. 26 in Florida’s Big Bend area. It had maximum sustained winds at sbout 140 mph. Millions were left without power , homes flooded, cars were buried and some roads were impassable due to debris and sand.

The powerful storm produced record-breaking storm surge across the Tampa Bay region. In fact, according to WFLA’s Chief Meteorologist Jeff Berardelli, Helene was Tampa’s highest hurricane surge in more than 100 years with 7 feet of surge.

That’s why WFLA is partnering with The American Red Cross in Florida to help with relief efforts for those recovering from the devastation. Help in the form of donations is especially important as Floridians respond to the destruction.
