Unlicensed Contractors Arrested in Pasco: Sheriff Urges Caution During Hurricane Season

As many Pasco residents begin repairing hurricane damage to their properties, the Pasco Sheriff’s Office has issued a stark warning about the risks of hiring unlicensed contractors. Last month, the Pasco Sheriff’s Office Economic Crimes Unit, in partnership with the New Port Richey Police Department, conducted a targeted sting operation, exposing a widespread issue of unlicensed contracting in the community. The operation resulted in the arrest of 20 individuals who were offering to perform contracting services such as electrical work, plumbing, air conditioning, and marine construction—all without the proper licenses.

The sting operation was a joint effort between Pasco County Building Construction Services and the City of New Port Richey, with the goal of protecting local residents from potential harm caused by unlicensed contractors.

Citizens who hire these contractors risk more than just substandard work and noncompliance with building codes. In many cases, hiring unlicensed individuals can leave property owners financially liable for damages and without legal recourse if the contractor breaches the agreement.
