HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — If you lived in Hillsborough County and you paid the surtax on certain items between 2019 and 2021, today is the last day to file a settlement claim in a class action lawsuit against the county.
This comes after Hillsborough County collected over half a billion dollars from that surtax.

The settlement will use the $569 million collected during the surtax period to pay out to those who file a claim and fund transportation projects and temporary sales tax holidays.
The surtax was applied to things like retail, hotel stays, event tickets and even commercial rent payments back from 2019 through 2021.
“It treated people in unincorporated Hillsborough County unfairly. People that have paid into this unlawful levy, they have a right to get their money back,” former Hillsborough County Commissioner Stacy White said.
