‘A nightmare’: South Tampa neighbors see water creep up to homes during ‘cloudburst’

TAMPA, Fla. — South Tampa residents said they’ve only been back home for a few weeks after last year’s hurricanes flooded them out but instantly had flashbacks when heavy rain fell in a short period of time Monday. Turns out it was a historic cloudburst that’s becoming more common across Tampa Bay.

In less than an hour, just before lunchtime, more than two inches of rain fell.

“We have two huge sewer drains [and] they were completely covered with water,” said Jan Holden, who lives a block north of Gandy Boulevard. “The water was up above the top of both of them, and nothing was draining.”…
