A unique community event, The Death Cafe, fosters deep conversations in Ybor City

A different kind of gathering is returning to Ybor City this summer. The Death Café, hosted by Death Doula Rebecca “Betty” Genesis, will take place Saturday, June 21, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at SpookEasy Lounge, 1909 N 15th St.

The idea is simple: bring people together to discuss death openly in a welcoming, judgment-free environment. There’s no pressure, no agenda, just honest conversation, hot tea, and meaningful connection.

The Death Cafe is a judgement free space

Genesis, a Full Spectrum Doula, helps individuals and families navigate life’s biggest transitions, including the end of life. Through her private practice, she offers support and guidance for those seeking a more personal and informed approach to final planning. She also works to normalize conversations around dying and mortality.

“I believe talking about death helps people better understand life,” said Genesis. “Death Café creates space for people to reflect, share, and simply listen. These conversations can open the door to a deeper sense of purpose and presence.”
