Tampa man charged with DUI after taking lawnmower on highway

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Tampa man was charged Friday morning after taking a lawnmower on the highway, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

A state trooper responded to the scene after getting reports of someone driving a lawnmower erratically on State Road 589 in Citrus County, heading into Hernando County.

At around 8:52 a.m., the trooper made contact with the man, 38-year-old Christopher Spain, sitting on the mower on the southbound shoulder of SR 589.

In the arrest report, the trooper said he immediately observed signs of impairment, including pinpoint pupils, flushed skin, dry mouth and irritation on the inside of his nose. Spain also kept sniffling, spitting and clearing his throat, the trooper said.

The trooper attempted to administer the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, which is when law enforcement observes if a suspect’s eyes involuntarily jerk when looking side to side, an indicator of alcohol or drug use. After attempting the test three times, Spain became uncooperative and refused further field sobriety tests, the arrest report said…
