TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Tampa Police Department officer was wounded in a shooting at a TPD building near Busch Gardens on Wednesday morning.
The officer was taken in the hospital and is in stable condition after undergoing surgery. In a news conference, Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw described the officer as being “in good spirits, despite what happened today.”

Bercaw said the officer, 40-year-old Jordan Laupert, works as a school resource officer at Hillsborough High School during the school year, but was temporarily assigned to patrol duty for the summer. At around 8:15 a.m., a man came to TPD’s district building and had “a cordial conversation” with the officer behind the building.
“The conversation appeared to be over. The officer turned and walked back toward the district, and he felt at that time that he had been shot in the leg,” Bercaw said…
