Child cancer-free and back in Philippines after traveling to Tampa to treat complex case

TAMPA, Fla. — Seven-year-old Gabby Montoya is home in the Philippines after traveling to Tampa to treat a rare cancer.

What was first thought to be a dental issue turned out to be a tumor in Gabby’s jaw. She was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer called mesenchymal chondrosarcoma. The National Institutes of Health reports head and neck chondrosarcomas account for about 0.1% of all cancerous head and neck tumors.

Gabby’s father said doctors in the Philippines told the Montoya’s that surgery to remove her tumor was not an option…
