Clearwater considers dropping Duke Energy, citing new study

CLEARWATER, Fla. — The city of Clearwater is looking for ways to decrease electric bills for residents.

Clearwater’s 30-year franchise agreement with Duke Energy expires at the end of the year. Mayor Bruce Rector said a new study suggests residents could save money if the city cuts ties with the utility.

“Their report will be, we believe, that it is feasible for the city to take over the electric service, and that we could offer almost immediately or not immediately lower rates to customers than what they’re currently being charged by Duke,” Rector said…
