Former HCSO detective calls for sheriff to resign amid internal investigation of alleged academic dishonesty

TAMPA, Fla. — A former employee with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) is calling for the sheriff to step down amid controversy within the department.

James Stahlschmidt, who was with HCSO from 1999 until he left in 2018, wrote a letter to state leaders, including the governor, calling for his removal and cited multiple allegations against Sheriff Chad Chronister.

“Why wouldn’t you be open to an independent investigation and step on aside? If there’s nothing there, ‘Hey, good for you.’ Maybe we were all wrong about you,” he said…
