ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Sheriff’s offices across the Tampa Bay area requested $1.92 million in grants to reimburse their participation in an immigration enforcement agreement.
Polk County has requested the most funds of more than $1 million, most of which would go to detention beds.
The 287(g) agreement, signed earlier this year by municipalities and counties in Florida, turns select local law enforcement into collaborators with federal immigration enforcement agencies.
