‘You didn’t deserve this’: Sister of murdered Lakeland mother of 3 visits niece in ICU

LAKELAND, Fla. (WFLA) — A family is destroyed and in mourning after a murder-suicide Monday night in Polk County. According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Jason Kenney, 47, murdered his wife Crystal, shot his stepdaughter twice, and then ended his own life over an argument stemming from television channels.

“I would tell my sister that I’m sorry that this happened to you. You didn’t deserve this. I promise I will love your babies so hard. The world deserves to know your story and the type of person you were. Her babies will never not know the type of mother she was. The love and the strength she had for them. They will know that. That will never stop,” said Stephanie Rourie, the victim’s sister.

Sheriff Grady Judd said Kenney and his wife began arguing around 11 p.m., and it turned violent. Crystal Kenney asked her 12-year-old son to call 911, and when deputies arrived at the home along Lemon Avenue in Highland City, they discovered Crystal deceased, and her 13-year-old stepdaughter with multiple gunshot wounds to the head and body.

“Quite frankly, I don’t want to sound sinister, but the only right thing he did all night was shoot and kill himself. It’s sad anytime. It’s horrific anytime. He had a chance. He could have gotten help,” said Sheriff Judd in a press conference Tuesday…
