AI gives Tampa police real-time translation capabilities in more than 50 languages

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Tampa Police Department now has three new tools driven by artificial intelligence to help officers in the field and dispatchers.

Tampa police officers have been using body worn camera for some time. Now those cameras can be used to listen to and understand foreign languages. The tool will allow officers to have real-time conversations with people who speak a foreign language.

“Before, maybe we were waiting for an officer that could translate to come out — or if it was urgent, trying to get online and get a translator on the phone — but now we can get that core, basic information out right away,” said Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw.
