HCSO unveils new ‘Grappler’ technology to end vehicle pursuits

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said it has implemented “Grappler” technology on at least 50 patrol vehicles.

“This system gives our deputies the ability to quickly and precisely disable a vehicle in a controlled manner,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “Tools like the Grappler provide real-time solutions in dynamic situations and reflect our continued commitment to equipping our deputies with advanced technology that enhances safety, accountability, and effectiveness in the field.”

The tool assists deputies by attaching to the underside of a fleeing vehicle’s back tire, connecting it to a patrol vehicle and ending a pursuit without the use of a PIT maneuver.
