TAMPA, Fla. – The Tampa Police Department has fired Assistant Chief Ruth Cate on Wednesday, ending a high-level standoff that began with a quiet retirement offer and escalated into allegations of retaliation.
The move comes just over a year after Chief Lee Bercaw promoted Cate to the executive role in February 2025. According to department officials, the relationship soured last Friday when Bercaw and the city’s Employee Relations Manager sat Cate down to tell her she was being let go. As an at-will employee, Cate was informed she had failed to meet the expectations of the job.
Because Cate had 29 years on the force, the department said they initially cut her a break. They agreed to let her retire and burn through her accrued vacation time instead of facing a formal firing. She was supposed to break the news of her retirement to her staff this past Monday…
