IN MEMORIAM: U20 ‘Dashing Eagle’ Elijah ‘Papo’ Battiste Gone Too Soon

ST. CROIX — The U.S. Virgin Islands soccer community is in mourning following the tragic death of 17-year-old Elijah “Papo” Battiste, a standout midfielder for the U20 Dashing Eagles national team.

Battiste, who was attending Armwood High School in Florida, was killed in a harrowing multi-vehicle collision east of Tampa late Saturday night. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Battiste was driving his Volkswagen Passat on State Road 574 around 11:00 PM when an eastbound Nissan Versa veered into his lane, causing a near head-on collision.

The initial impact spun both vehicles into the roadway. Moments later, a Ford F-150 struck Battiste’s vehicle on the driver’s side. In a cowardly turn that has sparked outrage across the territory and the Florida mainland, the driver of the Ford F-150 fled the scene on foot and remains at large.

A Legacy of Passion and Pride

Affectionately known as “Papo,” Elijah was a rising star in the territory’s soccer program.
