Phoenix names downtown transit “Greg Stanton Central Station”

PHOENIX — The Phoenix City Council approved the naming of the downtown Central Station transit center at the northwest corner of Central Avenue and Van Buren Street as the “Greg Stanton Central Station” at their formal meeting on Wednesday. Stanton served on the Phoenix City Council representing District 6 from 2000 to 2009 and then as the city’s mayor from 2012 to 2018.

The $245 million Central Transit Station Redevelopment includes more than 1 million square feet in two mixed-use towers connected to the city’s light rail and bus stations. The commemorative naming honors U.S. House of Representatives Rep. Greg Stanton for his years of public service and his support for improving public transportation in Phoenix, according to city officials.

“Today we honor Congressman Greg Stanton for his longtime commitment to Phoenix and Arizona’s transportation system,” said Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “Nearly a decade ago, Mayor Stanton brought together the City Council and the community to write and ultimately approve an increase in the extension of our dedicated local transportation, $32 billion plan to improve our system,” added Gallego.
