New Tempe nuisance, loud party ordinances take effect this weekend; fines to increase

TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — The area around Arizona State University in Tempe can get pretty noisy, especially on weekend nights. The city is now cracking down on big parties, saying it strains the police department. New nuisance and large gathering ordinances go into effect on Sunday.

“If we are sending four or five officers to the same nuisance party, that’s four or five officers who aren’t patrolling their beats, that aren’t going to other calls for service, or aren’t deterring crime somewhere else,” said Commander Kim Hale with Tempe Police.

If police respond to your residence for a large party within one year, the initial fine will now be $500, an increase from the original $250. A second violation will now cost $1,500, a jump from $1,000. A third time and each one after that will result in a fine of $4,000. Similar fine hikes apply to businesses violating things like liquor license laws…
