Monroe Sheriff calling on lawmakers to pass bill to rename M-50 after officer killed on duty

MONROE COUNTY, Mich. — The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has released a plea to Michigan residents and state officials to help rename a stretch of roadway in the county for an animal control officer who was killed on duty by a drunk driver in 2020.

According to the sheriff’s office, Officer Darrian Young was killed when her marked animal control vehicle was hit by a drunk driver near the intersection of South Custer and Raisinville roads. Following Young’s death, the county and her family sought to dedicate that part of M-50 between Raisinville and Herr roads as a memorial to her service to the community.

“Shortly after this tragedy, her family petitioned the Michigan legislature to name that portion of the road in her honor,” said Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough in a video posted to social media. “The funds to cover the signings were raised within weeks.”…
