Prosecutors, judge say Ohio guidelines direct weapons offenders to probation, local jail

When the defense lawyer for a man facing a weapons charge asked a Lucas County judge last week to reduce his bond, the recent mass shooting at the Old West End Festival surfaced in the judge’s denial.

“The last two young men who got probation on gun charges are now before me for attempted murder,” Common Pleas Judge Lori Olender told the lawyer after noting his client’s previous gun-related convictions. “We are taking these cases seriously.”

Two days before, Judge Olender had recited several gun-related cases one of the accused festival shooters had as a juvenile before she denied him bond for his current charges…
