To the editor: The holiday we never made and never needed

I was in second grade. My teacher was showing a movie on the classroom television. When it ended, she ejected the VHS tape, and the television flipped to cable. The channel landed on a scene showing a burning building.

With no context or explanation — just a tape sliding out of a now-archaic device — my class of 30 toggled between watching a cartoon about history and watching history live.
