I recently read the Blade article about bipartisan lawmakers attempting to pass legislation restricting or banning the use of Flock cameras. The concerns raised in the article center on allegations that information collected by Flock cameras has been misused or accessed by law en-forcement for purposes unrelated to legitimate law enforcement activities. There is also concern about whether and under what circumstances Flock data could be shared with federal law enforcement agencies.

Rather than banning the technology because of concerns about potential misuse or particular federal uses, I believe the focus should be on establishing clear policies, limiting access to legitimate law-enforcement purposes, maintaining audit trails, requiring appropriate authorization, and holding individuals and agencies accountable for violations…
