Toledo considers renter protection ordinance

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The Toledo City Council is considering a new ordinance that would bar landlords from retaliating against tenants who speak up, report problems or organize for better conditions.

Under the proposal, landlords could not raise rent, shut off utilities, refuse to renew a lease or try to evict a tenant for reporting unsafe conditions, whether to the city, the landlord or the media.

City leaders said the idea came after rental forums and a citywide survey found fear of retaliation was one of the top concerns among tenants…
