Two-alarm fire sends heavy smoke across Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio — A structure fire in south Toledo sent heavy smoke across a large portion of the city Sunday morning.

Toledo Fire & Rescue Department crews responded to the scene in the 600 block of Western Avenue around 5:15 a.m., after a passerby reported seeing heavy smoke coming from a building, according to a Toledo Fire spokesperson. Crews began working the fire and a second alarm was called around 10 minutes later for additional support.

Conditions inside the building made it difficult to attack the fire. Around 6:04 a.m., crews transitioned to a defensive attack when it was determined to be unsafe. Firefighters remained on scene for hours after to address hot spots and make sure the fire was contained. Utilities were notified…
